Meet the Team — Momchil Kiryakov, Analyst

GRID works with a plethora of data, whether that’s in-game data from the GRID Data Platform, or the business-focused numbers and statistics that run through many teams within the company. Properly collecting, organizing, and efficiently utilizing this data could be tricky — but Momchil Kiryakov, GRID’s Analyst, is the mastermind who has a foot in these departments, tackling this challenge.

Continue reading to learn about Momchil’s multifaceted role on the GRID, his passion for analytics in gaming, and how his GRID journey started:

Where do you primarily work from? Are you based in one of GRID’s offices or working remotely?

I’m working from my home in a small Bulgarian town called Provadia. The serenity of the place where I live means a lot to me, and I’d rather not trade it for the hassle of the big city. It’s great that GRID gives me that opportunity.

What does your day-to-day look like as an Analyst on the GRID?

That’s a hard one because no single day at GRID is the same for me. I’m working on a lot of different tasks for a lot of different teams within the company. This includes documenting and organizing data from GRID-commissioned tournaments, providing requested data to our clients, building sales-oriented tools in collaboration with the Sales Team, collecting and analyzing Champion of Champions Tour (CCT) data, and much more.

How does your work tie into the greater Operations Team? Do you primarily work individually or as a part of group projects?

Since the specific tasks are quite a lot and of various nature, I’ll summarize my work into four main dimensions:

  1. Being the “go-to guy” for Google Sheets-related tasks.
  2. Facilitating the work and communication of the different teams related to the GRID own-operated events
  3. Helping Matthias (GRID’s CFO) and, more importantly, learning everything I can from him about the events’ financial analysis.
  4. Be part of the building process for the Business Data Structure within the company

Does working in the esports industry bring any unique aspects to your job? And have you always been interested in this industry?

I’ve always been interested in games and statistics. I remember telling our People Team during my entry interview that I’d still be crunching numbers about video games even if I didn’t work for GRID. It would just be a nice bonus if I could do it as a part of my job.

A fun fact about me is that I used to compete professionally in Hearthstone and sustained myself out of playing and coaching.

How did your GRID story start?

I was invited as a commentator and analyst for a series of local Hearthstone events (It was the A1 Bulgarian League). There, I met a former member of GRID and managed to impress him without even knowing 🙂 So, a couple of years later, he offered me a job.

From your perspective, how would you describe what GRID does as a company?

GRID is putting high-level analytics and gaming together. It’s basically what I’ve been trying to do all my life, although on a smaller, individual scale.

We have quite a diverse group at GRID with many different interests. What are some of your favorite hobbies outside of work?

I spend most of my time outside of work on gaming and reading.

Favorite Game — Magic: The Gathering

Favorite Book Series — Malazan Book of the Fallen
